Welcome back! In our last post, we explored the foundational relationship within a family: the bond between husband and wife. Now, we’re turning our attention to another crucial part of the family dynamic – the beautiful and sometimes challenging connection between parents and their children. Let’s journey together as we unpack the biblical principles that guide this vital relationship. Let’s start this with parents.

Parents to Children

Parents are instructed not to provoke their children to anger, but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. This emphasizes nurturing and guidance, not harshness.

Treat Children as Heritage

  • Children are a precious gift from God
  • Children should be nurtured with sense of gratitude and responsibility.
  • Children are not possessions but individuals to be nurtured and cherished.

Psalm 127:3: (NASB)

“Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward.”

Teach and Model Faith

Deuteronomy 6:4-9: (NASB)

“These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. And you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.”

  • Parents must actively teach their children about God’s Word.
  • Parents are called to integrate faith into everyday life.
  • Parents are to be the role models of faith for their children.

Train Children for Future

Proverbs 22:6

“Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he grows older he will not abandon it.”

  • Parents are required to equip them for a life of purpose and faithfulness.
  • Parents are required to discipline, instruct and be a good example.

Be a Gentle Leader to your Child

Ephesians 6:4: (NASB)

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

Colossians 3:21: (NASB)

“Fathers, do not antagonize your children, so that they will not become discouraged.”

  • Parents are required to be the patient guides.
  • Provide environment where they can grow in wisdom and stature.
  • Parents be the source of encouragement and strength.

Discipline your Child

Proverbs 23:13: (NASB)

“Do not withhold discipline from a child; Though you strike him with the rod, he will not die.”

Children to Parents

What if honoring your parents could enrich your life? The truth is it can. In a world of constant change, their experience is a valuable gift. The Bible teaches us that respecting our parents is part of God’s loving plan. It’s not about giving up your individuality; it’s about gaining insights that can help you navigate life with greater clarity and purpose. By choosing to honor them, you’re building a foundation for stronger relationships and a deeper connection with God. The Bible provides insight into this; let’s explore the scriptures. I encourage you to read and ponder these references further.

Ephesians 6:1-3: (NASB)

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is rightHonor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may turn out well for you, and that you may live long on the earth.”

Colossians 3:20: (NASB)

“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord.”

Proverbs 6:20

“My son, comply with the commandment of your father, And do not ignore the teaching of your mother;”

Proverbs 13:1

“A wise son accepts his father’s discipline, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.”

Honor your parents, for this is pleasing to the Lord. The second part of our post “obedience: Life Applications 2, ends here. We will continue with part 3 of the post.
