Mother Mary’s Obedience: Lessons In Faith
Our series of Lessons in Faith continues and this post is about Mother Mary’s obedience. It may seem less outwardly dramatic than some other biblical figures. However, it is a profound example of quiet strength. It also demonstrates faith and submission to God’s will. Let’s look at some of the key characteristics.
Humble Acceptance
The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, telling her she would conceive a child by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:26-38). She didn’t react with immediate understanding or excitement, but questioned, “How will this be,” she asked, “since I am a virgin?” (Luke 1:34). Yet, once Gabriel explained God’s plan, Mary responded with remarkable humility and submission. “I am the Lord’s servant,” she answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38). Mary gave this “yes” despite the social stigma and potential consequences she would face as an unmarried pregnant woman.
Obedience rooted in Faith
Mary’s obedience wasn’t blind; it was rooted in a deep faith in God and His promises. She believed the seemingly impossible message from Gabriel and trusted that God would accomplish what He had said. This faith allowed her to accept a situation that was beyond human comprehension and control.
Obedience in the face of uncertainty
Accepting the role of the mother of Jesus was not without significant personal risk. Mary faced potential social ostracization, shame, and even the possibility of being rejected by Joseph. Yet, she chose obedience despite the uncertainty and potential hardship. This demonstrates a courageous faith that prioritizes God’s will above personal comfort and security.

Obedience manifested through action
Mary’s obedience wasn’t just an internal attitude; it was demonstrated through her actions. She traveled to Bethlehem for the census, where she gave birth to Jesus in humble circumstances (Luke 2:1-7). She cared for Jesus throughout his childhood and supported him in his ministry. These actions demonstrate that her initial “yes” was followed by a lifetime of faithful obedience.
Enduring obedience
Mary’s obedience wasn’t marked by dramatic pronouncements or public displays of power, but rather a quiet, consistent commitment to her role as the mother of Jesus. She endured hardships and uncertainties with grace and strength, often pondering these things in her heart (Luke 2:19, 51). By reflecting on God’s work in her life, she remained faithful to her unique calling. This ends here.
Mary’s obedience is a powerful example for all believers, particularly in its emphasis on humility, faith, and quiet strength. It shows us that obedience isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s about accepting God’s will in the midst of ordinary life. It involves trusting in His promises and persevering through challenges with grace and faithfulness.May God strengthen us to trust HIS promises and persevere through challenges. I will see you soon in the next post.
